Homicide detective Janet Barlow has problems. I'm an avid mystery reader, and this was terrific. It was a great escape, well written, and full of surprises. The sexual tension and impending doom were tempered with relevant sub-plots about co-workers and fun family dynamics. The pacing is just what I love in a mystery--a mix of nervous anticipation, characters I care about, and just enough humor. Especially clever are chapter endings that make it a real page-turner. It was hard to put this one down. Write more soon!! (I'm a Kate Atkinson fan, and this didn't disappoint.)
The Chameleon is an addictive thriller that kept me up way too late! Well-paced and gripping, the book balances the gritty details of a serial-murder case with the aspirations of a marginalized female detective. Peter Guthrie has crafted a narrative packed with sex, violence, and intrigue. Yet the book, cannily, highlights themes of discrimination and harrassment as well. Psychologically astute and truly hair-raising, The Chameleon offers the reader a fresh perspective on heinous crime and its combatants. Wondering what's next from this author.
Peter Guthrie is a first-time mystery writer/publisher and I hope he does more! Fun and very readable, with intelligence and some wry humor.
Sex, violence, a serial killer, and believable characters with real issues. What's not to like? The ending was satisfying and exciting, but the readers will want to know what happens next with several of the characters, especially their love - and did I mention sex? - lives. I'll be looking for the next book in what should be a successful series.
A riveting Law and Order type tale, by the time I was finished with the Chameleon I found that I actually cared about the characters, with the exception of course, of the serial killer. Guthrie writes with calm assurance and economic brevity, with nothing to distract from the suspense of a tightly wired plot. What sets this book above the average suspense tale is Guthrie's sense of character and psychology, from which emanates feelings both positive and creepy. Don't read it alone.
Great murder mystery. I highly recommend this novel. Fast paced with good character development. I didn't want to put it down.
